About
Mousecatcher Street officially formed in 2022, after years of playing together in pub folk sessions and gigs on the Oxford folk scene. Now we enjoy playing music for ceilidhs at parties, weddings, college events and more all over Oxfordshire. Find out more about who we are below.
And the name? It was a fifteenth-century version of Oxford’s Catte Street!
Members
Caller: Alex Burgar
Alex is a ceilidh caller, comedian, and singer based in Oxford. Her involvement with folk music began in the Oxford University Ceilidh Band. She has called ceilidhs in English and German, in the UK and Europe, and is noted for her humour, clarity, and showmanship. Alex is also a choral soprano and folk singer.
As a comedian, Alex performed her award-nominated debut hour, Burgarmeister, in 2023. She is currently working on a PhD addressing national identity projection in Eastern Europe and the Balkans at the Eurovision Song Contest.
Fiddle: Alice Ahearn
Alice has been playing the violin since she was a young child, but started out in folk with the Oxford University Ceilidh Band in 2015, where she learnt it was actually pronounced 'fiddle'. After stints exploring the folk scene in London and the north-east of England, she eventually returned to Oxford and remains a regular on the session circuit.
She completed a PhD in Classics in 2023, and now works as a librarian, editor, and writer.
Whistles/bagpipes: Callum Beck
Callum is a multi-instrumentalist based in Oxford, usually found at Irish and Scottish sessions around the city. He plays whistles and pipes (highland pipes, reelpipes, and Scottish smallpipes) with Mousecatcher Street. When not playing with us, Callum can be found playing with HalfPipe, Quest for Folk, or Macánta Pipe Band.
Outside of music, Callum recently completed a doctorate in Physical Chemistry and is now training to be a secondary school chemistry teacher.
Guitar: Tim Davies
Tim has been playing folk music since 2011, spending many years with both the Cambridge and Oxford University Ceilidh Bands, and playing with the Family Ceilidh ceilidh band in Oxford. While he plays guitar with Mousecatcher Street, he's a folk multi-instrumentalist and ceilidh caller, and has been known to play at gigs and sessions on whistles, bodhrán, and even saxophone.
